Just when you’re settled in the lights don’t work or the microwave goes out. What just happened? You probably just blew a fuse or tripped a breaker. How? Could be an overload or maybe a short circuit, ok but what can cause an overload or short circuit?
Whether it’s a fuse or a circuit breaker the same conditions can cause a fuse to blow or a circuit breaker to trip.
In an overload there is too much current demand on the circuit, this happens when too many items are plugged unto one circuit. Either a power strip is used to enable one tu plug more than the wall outlet allows or someone has added more outlets or lights onto the same circuit creating more current demand on it.
In a short circuit the ‘’hot’’ has become grounded for some reason. Often times when driving a nail or screw into a wall it has been driven thru the romex. What the nail or screw can do is drive thru the soft plastic sheath of the romex and thru the plastic jacket of the hot wire. This tearing of the plastic jacket that protects the wire allows contact between the hot wire and the ground or neutral. This condition can be described as a short circuit.
In an overload it can be as simple as reducing the current demand and replacing the blown fuse or resetting of the circuit breaker.
In a short circuit the cause must first be investigated and fixed before replacing a fuse or resetting the circuit breaker.

*Fuse boxes are limited in how many circuits are available-most are only two if maybe four circuits. Electrical panels may have 20, 32, and even 42 spaces for circuit breakers allowing room for growth.
